Memories of a swim meet

Recently I attended my younger brother's swim meet.  Seeing my brother do so many of the same things I used to do, makes me long for those days past.  Being a part of a team of athletes working to a single goal, winning and then the celebration of winning.  The working to make yourself better every day and coming home exhausted after a hard workout.  Working to decrease the amount of time it takes you to do a 50m freestyle sprint.  It makes me wish I could still be doing something like that.  These things that my brother is doing will remind me of how much fun it was to be a part of a team.  It will also remind me of all the great people I met along the way  Sports were the places I had the most fun in high school and grade school.  College is different and I hope to find something like that here at Lewis.

  1. As a current athlete I know I'll definitly miss the days when I can no longer compete, so thanks for reminding me to enjoy every moment! I agree that the hard work and exhaustion is definitely worth the reward at the end.

  2. This is some serious stuff, Jonathon. I also identify. Growing up in Florida, swimming was my life -- or, a lot of it. I was never on a team (it had been a dream of mine, but Mom didn't want to drive me to practice -- she said, "I've got 5 kids, and who do you think you are?" (ouch!). Anyhow, I have a lapsing gym membership and Spring Break coming up, so this post prompts me to get in the pool! I love that silent, underwater meditative state!! I too hope you find something here at Lewis!!

  3. Hey John, I'm not an athlete and neither have I been involved with sports all that much in my life. However, I can relate to that feeling of being part of a team, successfully achieving goals, and being the best at what you train for, having been in the army. There's no doubt that I miss my days in the service now when I see my comrades who are still in service or my old school mates who are enlisting. I feel like I want to be back training alongside them. It's a weird feeling but that's when I tell myself to look straight and keep putting one foot in front of the other. In the end, it is the experiences and memories that we make that are truly important.
